Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a procedure used to exfoliate the skin and remove vellus hair (peach fuzz). It is used to treat dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, and fine lines and wrinkles (*). By removing the top dead layer of skin, skin care products can work more effectively by penetrating more easily into the deeper layers of the skin (*). Dermaplaning is an excellent option for exfoliation for women who are pregnant and nursing as well as for those who typically have dry or sensitive skin (*).

What Results Should I Expect And Is There Any Downtime?

Your skin will immediately feel softer and smoother, though individual results may vary (*). There is no downtime with dermaplaning.

How Is A Dermaplane Facial Done?

Dermaplaning involves the use of a blade that is gently glided across the skin to help remove the outermost dead layer of skin cells and vellus hair. Dermaplaning may be performed as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with other treatments such as facials, ultrasonic facials, or chemical peels. By combining treatments you maximize the efficacy of skin care products and services by allowing them to penetrate more deeply into the skin (*). For the ultimate facial, dermaplaning can be combined with a facial along with an ultrasonic facial treatment.

What Is The Difference Between Microdermabrasion, Ultrasonic Facials, Chemical Peels and Dermaplaning?

All of these treatments involve exfoliation of the skin however, the means by which they exfoliate are different.

Microdermabrasion uses a diamond tip wand or crystals over the skin to lift the outermost dead layer of skin cells while suction is applied to remove any debris including blackheads/white heads and dead skin cells.

Ultrasonic facial treatments utilize water and a flat paddle that is gently glided over the skin to help remove the outermost layer of the skin and then combines the use of ultrasound to help penetrate products into the skin to help improve specific conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, oily skin, dryness and redness.

Chemical peels involve the application of chemicals which over the course of a few days to a week cause exfoliation or peeling of the skin. Peels are generally an excellent treatment to help regain control of acne or to help improve sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma and dry skin (*). Chemical peels help to reduce bacteria and restore natural moisture balance to the skin (*).

Dermaplaning involves the use of a blade that is gently glided across the skin to remove the outermost layer of the skin and offers the added benefit of removing fine vellus hairs. Dermaplaning is well suited for drier skin types and anyone who wants to get rid of peach fuzz (*).

Since all of the above treatments offer similar but different benefits it can be confusing as to which treatment may be best for you. We are always happy to discuss your personal concerns and goals with you to help direct you towards the best treatment. However sometimes it’s best to experience each treatment to gain a better understanding of how it affects and improves your skin. Please ask us about our “try a service package” where you can experience each of the above treatments and receive a discount.

Will Dermaplaning Remove Wrinkles?

Dermaplaning will not remove sunspots or wrinkles however by removing the outermost layer of the skin it will allow for products and treatments that you apply to the area to work more effectively (*).

How Often Do I Need A Treatment?

We generally recommend one treatment every 2-4 weeks however some people elect to have dermaplaning done every 3 months or during the winter months when their skin tends to be more dry (*).
