Kybella® is deoxycholic acid which is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment and alternative to liposuction for use to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fullness below the chin, also known as the “double chin” or submental fat (*). Deoxycholic acid produced in the body helps the body absorb fats. Kybella® is a drug that when injected into tissue physically destroys fat cell membranes causing the body to metabolize or breakdown the affected fat cells over the course of several weeks reducing the amount of fat in the treatment area (*). Kybella® will not improve sagging skin of the neck. It is not known if Kybella® is safe and effective in individuals less than 18 years of age or if it is safe and effective for use outside the submental area.
What To Expect
A consultation is required for all patients to review one’s medical history and to determine if Kybella® is right for you.
Each Kybella® treatment involves several injections in various locations beneath the chin. Each treatment is usually completed in approximately 15 minutes. Immediately following treatment, your chin and neck may feel tender or numb. Mild swelling, bruising, redness and tingling are possible; these effects typically subside within 1-2 weeks after treatment (*).
The number of treatments needed to achieve optimal results is patient dependent. Typically a series of 2-4 treatments are recommended, however patients with minimal fat under the chin may require only one treatment while those with more submental fullness may desire three treatments, typically 6 weeks apart (*).
Results are generally seen with each treatment within 2-4 weeks but may take up to 6 weeks (*).
How Long Will Results Last?
While Kybella® removes a number of fat cells in the submental area, there are still some fat cells that remain. If you gain weight, those remaining fat cells can still grow and expand. However, there are fewer fat cells remaining, so the fullness should be to a lesser degree should you gain weight (*).
