| What is a dermal filler and how do they work?
A dermal filler is a gel like product composed of collagen, hyluronic acid, or calcium hydroxylapatite that is used to fill in space and restore volume. Hyluronic acid such as Juvederm® is hydrophilic, which means that it acts by absorbing water to help restore volume. Radiesse® is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite which actually acts to stimulate the body's own natural collagen to restore volume. Which dermal fillers does ANEWU Medical Spa offer?
We offer both Juvederm® Ultra and Ultra Plus as well as Radiesse®. How is Botox® different from dermal fillers?
Botox® does not fill in space or add volume. Botox® acts by relaxing the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botox® is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles, which helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles thus preventing them from worsening. Botox® is typically used in the upper one third of the face, while fillers are typically used in the lower two thirds of the face. What areas may be treated with dermal fillers? Some dermal fillers may be used to treat hollow under the eyes to help reduce the appearance of "bags" under the eyes, to restore volume loss to cheeks, nasolabial folds, marrionette lines, jowls, lips and even to the hands. Will I look like myself after I am injected? Most people want to look like themselves, just a little refreshed. The best way to explain how fillers will enhance one's appearance is to look at a picture of yourself from 10 years ago and look at the area that bothers you the most. See how the area has changed with time. Our goal is to restore the volume in the face to where it was 5-15 years ago while still maintaining your natural features. How long will it take to see the results? Results are typically seen immediately but may take up to 72 hours to see the full effect. How many treatments will I need? Most patients are typically pleased with one treatment every 9-18 months. However; due to cost and individual volume loss some patients may elect to have treatments more frequently. Patients with moderate to severe volume loss may elect to add volume back gradually. Most patients that return sooner do so because they enjoy treating different areas of the face at a time, making their transformation more gradual. How long will my results last? Individual results may vary based on medications that you may be taking, level of activity, and the individual's basal metabolic rate. However; Juvederm® typically lasts 6-12 months and Radiesse® typically lasts 9-18 months. What are the risks associated with dermal fillers? The most commonly reported side effects include redness, swelling and bruising in the area of injection. Redness usually resoves within a few hours and swelling typically resolves within 48 hours. Bruising may occur and can be mild, moderate, or severe. To minimize bruising it is best to discontinue anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin and alcohol two weeks prior to treatment. Do not discontinue medications without consulting with your physician first. In rare instances nodules may form and be a long term side effect. Radiesse® may be visible on x-rays and other radiologic imaging such as CT-scans and MRIs. It is distinguishably different from natural body structures. Am I a candidate for dermal fillers? Patients who are pregnant, attempting to become pregnant, or may be pregnant or are breastfeeding should not receive dermal fillers. Patients who have numerous severe medication allergies should not be injected. Persons who also have known active infection or uncontrolled diabetes should also not be treated. What is the cost of a treatment? The cost of treatment varies depending on site and the extent of the volume loss. Syringes of product come pre-filled, therefore you purchase the number of syringes you need based on volume loss. The average patient may use 1-3 syringes of product. A consultation is required to determine the amount of product that is needed. Which product is best for me? Most patients choose product based on the volume they need and the overall cost of treatment. We will advise you on the most cost effective treatment. However; certain areas such as tear troughs (the hollow under the eyes), lips, acne scars, and superfical fine lines are best injected with Juvederm®. What should I do prior to treatment? Unlike collagen, Juvederm® and Radiesse® do not require allergy testing. To reduce the incidence of bruising or bleeding, avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (such as Ibuprofen, Advil, or Aleve), St. John's Wart, or high doses of Vitamin E (greater than 400 units daily) 7-10 days prior to treatment. Also, if you have a history of cold sores, there is a low risk that dermal filler treatments could contribute to an outbreak. However, an antiviral medication such as Valtrex can be prescribed prior to treatment. Want to receive a discount on services? Host a Filler and Botox® party!
