As women age, they experience changes to the female anatomy that are largely due to decreasing levels of estrogen. Women who have experienced childbirth or menopause may notice a difference in their vaginal health, including dryness, laxity, painful intercourse, frequent vaginal infections and urinary incontinence. Some of these symptoms are treatable with hormone replacement therapies. However, not all women are able to take hormones or may not have experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms with hormonal treatment. As many of our patients are breast cancer survivors with a history of hormone sensitive cancer, FemTouch™ can provide a hormone free treatment that aims to improve their vaginal health. The FemTouch™ is an outpatient, minimally invasive, non-surgical, non-hormonal, laser treatment for treating and improving vaginal health for women of all ages.
The FemTouch™ laser uses a fractional CO2 laser beam that gently ablates and coagulates the vaginal wall which promotes collagen production and remodeling of the vaginal mucosa. This helps to thicken the vaginal wall and increase vaginal secretions, helping to alleviate symptoms related to vaginal dryness caused by atrophy. A sterilized lubricated applicator is inserted into the vagina and the Femtocuh™ delivers low continuous wave CO2 energy levels in a 360 degree fractional pattern along the vaginal walls to ensure the entire area is treated. Patients may experience a minor sensation of heat or vibration and rarely causes any significant discomfort. For patients that have stress urinary incontinence additional pulses may be used along the urethra to help strength the tissue to further help alleviate the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence such as urinary frequency and incontinence of urine with coughing, laughing or sneezing.
Each treatment takes only 5 minutes. However additional time is allowed for a pelvic exam prior to each treatment.
During the Femtouch™ procedure patients report little to no discomfort and therefore anesthetic and/or anesthesia are not required.
For optimal results, most patients will require 2-4 treatments. Each treatment is performed 4-6 weeks apart. Most patients will report a significant improvement even after just one treatment however it may take 3-6 months to see the full benefit of a series of treatments. A maintenance treatment is generally recommended every 1-2 years.
The most commonly reported side effects after a treatment are itching, redness, swelling, inflammation, tenderness, burning with urination, mild spotting or vaginal bleeding as well as pink or brown vaginal discharge and mild to profuse watery vaginal discharge. These side effects typically resolve within one week.
Patients can return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment. It is recommended to refrain from intercourse, swimming or taking a bath for 3 days post treatment. Patients should avoid using heat to the treatment area a well as sitting in a sauna or hot tub until the area has completely healed. A vaginal hydrating gel may be prescribed for one week post treatment to help sooth the vaginal lining.
Patients can have a Femtouch™ treatment as soon as 6 weeks postpartum. FemTouch is not contraindicated with breastfeeding.
Before having a FemTouch™ treatment, you must have had a normal pap smear within the past year. We require that a copy of your most recent pap smear be sent to our office prior to consultation. A detailed medical history will be reviewed at the time of consultation and a pelvic exam will be performed to ensure that the FemTouch™ procedure is right for you.
