Are There Side Effects To Laser Tattoo Removal?

The most common side effects from laser tattoo removal are

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Scabbing
  • Pinpoint bleeding
  • Blistering (may also occur)

These effects typically resolve in 3-5 days.  In rare instances permanent pigmentation changes such as hyper or hypopigmentation and scarring may occur.

What Are The Benefits With Laser Tattoo Removal?

Overall, laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective way to remove a tattoo or fade the ink sufficiently to allow for a cover up tattoo if you desire. There is limited downtime with laser tattoo removal and few contraindications to treatment!

Other types of tattoo removal treatments don’t offer the same benefits.

Alternatives to laser tattoo include surgical excision of the tattoo which results in a scar and therefore is typically advised only for small tattoos.  Lastly, dermabrasion is a procedure that uses a rotating tool to abrade the outermost layer of skin thereby pushing the ink down into the skin causing it to be absorbed by the tissue.  Unfortunately, dermabrasion provides unpredictable results.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Lasers work to remove tattoos by breaking up the ink with energy. The energy emitted by the laser reacts with the ink particles in the skin causing a photoacoustic effect.

During this process the ink in the tattoo absorbs the laser energy. The energy is then converted into heat and as the heat increases the temperature of the ink the ink begins to expand and breaks up into smaller ink particles.  Over time the body’s lymphatic system absorbs the smaller ink particles and begins to clear them resulting in fading of the tattoo.

How Much Will This Cost Me?

The cost to remove a tattoo is based on the size of the tattoo and the number of treatments needed.  Professional tattoos typically require 8-12 treatments or more depending on how much ink was deposited as well as the age of the tattoo.  Amateur tattoos typically require fewer treatments as less ink is typically deposited.

Is there any at-home-care after my tattoo removal session?

After your session we advise keeping the area clean, dry and covered until the skin has healed.  Immediately after the treatment the area is cleansed and a light coat of bacitracin ointment is applied and covered with a bandaid or gauze.  We suggest cleansing the area and changing the dressing twice a day if there are any open areas or blistering of the skin.  If there are no blisters, scabbing or open areas then the treatment area can be left open to air.
